The 3 things you SHOULD know about Wrong Fuel!

AdBlue In Your Diesel

All around Lincolnshire we have seen increasingly more examples of AdBlue contamination whereby a driver has put AdBlue directly into their diesel fuel tank. This is to a degree as a result of drivers being unsure of the right way to to make use of (pay attention: it is not a fuel additive), and to some extent due to the fact that the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are typically directly close to one another on the car.

So, precisely what is the issue with putting AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Because the product is mainly deionised water, it's nearly as good as pouring water in to your tank. Diesel and water do not ever blend at all and trying to run a diesel car on water is not going to work. Moreover, the urea is quite corrosive to your fuel system pipes and seals and is susceptible to crystalising, blocking injectors and filters. If in case you have put AdBlue into your fuel tank get it drained immediately. And certainly never crank the car - not even to shift it to a parking bay. Assuming you did start the vehicle you may in all likelihood need to have the whole fuel system flushed and filters changed.

Give us a call if you have experienced AdBlue contamination. We can help you. We are Contaminated Fuel Specialists and can easily attend to all types of AdBlue liquid contamination.

It truly was what we call an unsociable hour to be up. It was about 3am and almost noone was stirring. It had been pretty dead so far, and me and Mark were relaxing browsing several old magazines. It was an uncommon peaceful moment in Lincolnshire. It was in fact that relaxing that when the phone eventually rang I leaped with surprise! The motorist stated: "I've just completed my overnight shift and incredibly put the wrong fuel in the canary yellow Ford Club Wagon in error". I asked him to inform us exactly where the car was and we headed out, getting to him in High Barn no more than half an hour later. The incorrect fuel was cleared from the vehicle and he said thanks for coming out so quickly. While we were returning to the depot we noticed two ladies on the edge of the street who appeared to have a flat. Accordingly we pulled up to help them change it, to their delight.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
